DNA Repair Science

Cells replicate everyday with errors, scrambling our genetic code. When generations of cells become more damaged with time, organ systems made of these increasingly damaged cells start to degrade, leading to aging and disease. What is DNA?

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is genetic material containing the biological instructions that make each species unique.1 This code determines every part of you–from your eye and hair color to how well you carry out the complicated bodily processes required for good health. Each time a cell replicates, the instructions contained in that cell’s DNA are copied to the new offspring cell. Since your cells replicate constantly throughout your lifetime, each new cell copy includes a duplicate of these instructions. When your cells are damaged, this code becomes compromised, which means the instructions that tell your body how to carry out necessary processes are no longer accurate, and this can lead to major diseases and other health issues as you age. Why is DNA repair important?

Our DNA is vulnerable and needs to be protected and repaired. Every single day, we are all exposed to toxins from the environment: through our food, our air and water, and even to biological toxins produced by our very own bodies through the processes of living. These toxins all have the potential to wreak havoc and damage the DNA in our cells if we don’t eliminate them properly. Without us even knowing it or “feeling” it, we experience literally up to a million of such DNA accidents every day.1 It is the accumulated DNA damage that underlies many of the unwanted symptoms and conditions that plague us as we age, and prevent us from living completely healthy, vibrant lives. When DNA becomes damaged, it’s like having your control board short-circuited. Suddenly normal cell activities are interrupted, healthy cell replication may turn into abnormal overgrowth of unhealthy cells, and you are set up for premature aging, less than optimal daily functioning, and over the long haul, the potential for serious disease.

Nature, ever protective of our genes, provides repair enzymes that remove damaged sections of DNA and replace them with the correct sequence of letters. It’s a remarkable system, first involving a set of enzymes that recognizes the specific kind of damage that’s been done. A second set of enzymes moves in and cuts out the damaged section of DNA. Then a third set of enzymes puts in a replacement piece, followed by a fourth set that “glues” it in place and “seals” the seams. A final step disposes of the damaged segment.2

Remarkable as this repair kit is, damage accumulates faster than it can be repaired, causing mistakes in protein and enzyme synthesis that lead to errors in metabolism. The first sign is lack of energy, followed by visible signs of aging. Aging-related diseases such as cancer, diabetes, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, general inflammation,3 and tumor growth can virtually all be traced to genetic damage. Poor DNA repair, aging and disease

DNA is central to cell viability. Loss of DNA repair function allows DNA damage to persist, and carry over to the next generation of replicated cells. This leads to a variety of cellular defects ultimately leading to cell death, and potentially even worse effects such as the loss of cell cycle control and cancer. In certain cases, loss in DNA repair function can lead to a variety of chronic human diseases including atherosclerosis, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.1 2 3 4 It can also be directly traced to osteoporosis and cataracts.5 Additionally, DNA repair may be very important in the progression of neural and cognitive disease such as Parkinson’s.6

Phytonutrients and DNA Repair

Mounting evidence supports the beneficial nature of antioxidants, carotenoids, and other phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables. In fact, in a blind study, a group of twenty elderly volunteers (mean age=68) were given phytonutrient supplements twice a day for 80 days with blood samples drawn before and after intervention. The results showed a highly significant (p<0.0001) decrease in measured DNA damage between pre (13.24±2.77) and post (4.41±2.76) treatment. The technique used to analyze participants’ blood samples was the comet assay – the gold standard for measuring DNA damage levels. The study investigators concluded that a daily course of fruit and vegetable extract supplementation may reduce the level of DNA damage found in the peripheral lymphocytes of seniors.1

    I see you have 350mg of ac-11® in this product. Is this the effective dosage for this ingredient? I want to make sure before buying.

      Yes, 350 mg is the effective dose of ac-11®. ac-11® has been studied and proven to be effective in doses between 300-750 mg. Dose recommendation is determined by body weight. For example, adults over 175 pounds are recommended to consume an ac-11® dose closer to 700 mg. To obtain a higher dose, you may consider supplementing pure ac-11® capsules or Healthycell pro additionally to the DNA Repair.
